How many of us thought about emigration? How many left their families for months and years just to improve the finances in what then seemed to be a hopeless situation? How many felt unbearable homesickness and longing for friends and family? How many saw their parents grow old and how many missed every single national reminder, not suspecting themselves of any traces of patriotism? In life, we make various decisions. Following our heart and dreams, we risk everything to be genuine to ourselves, to live the life we always wanted. This is one story among millions of stories. Personal episodes full of happy endings, losses, and successes. Aren't we all innocents abroad, looking for our place, building our lives from scratch, after one or two failures? Don't we, among the countries available, really look for a home? Brooklyn.
Occasionally you find yourself in circumstances which are different from your usual daily routine. At times you meet people who enter your world with a completely new perspective and allow you to explore their world. You might be worlds apart. You might end up friends, lovers or enemies. You can have a bad influence on each other. You can make each other mad. But all in all, something drives you to give it a go. Even if for a while. Even if for a wink. My Summer of Love. A film which will take you to one such get-together and will linger for some time, not allowing to let go.
Breaking up is hard. We devote so much energy to build and maintain a relationship that when it's finally over, we feel that we lost time, money and self-esteem. The problem is that when we like someone we try to pretend that we are better, wiser or more attractive. Pretending all the time is impossible and all of a sudden we might not meet the expectations. We end up being not witty enough, not career-oriented enough, or not talented enough to be enough for a lifetime. A relationship is not a profession. There are ups and downs and it's sometimes better to feel at ease with someone than stand on the tips of your toes for the rest of your life. It's nice to be accepted for who you are. An uplifting comedy about love from the Netherlands. Ja ik wil!
Europe's population growth has been falling for some time now. The mass migration has boosted the numbers of inhabitants to some extent. But if the numbers don't stop dropping? What if next decades bring us less and less newborns? Will the generation age? Will people have problems with feeding those who remain? Will they be humane to others and which instincts are they going to follow in their wish to survive? Do love, compassion, and friendship have any chance to run interpersonal skills and why the lesser evil is sometimes the last resort? The Survivalist.
Fate. You may be a little bit skeptical about its devious ways. You might not believe in horoscopes, fortune tellers, and stars. You can be above it. But what about intuition? Feeling? Hunch? Premonition? Why always in your life you choose the second option? Why all your firsts were unsuccessful and why all your thirds proved to be your life's fulfillment? Maybe you dreamt about changing a house and after a while, it came true, even though in a slightly metaphorical manner? Possibly you knew who you want to marry after casting your eyes on this person for the very first time, and you had never before believed in the love at first sight. There are things beyond our comprehension and although it's the 21st century, it takes a lot of confidence to claim that there is only science and reason. This is a story of one such family which was driven by forces not closed in an equation. Enjoy.
If you had a bad day at work, if your boss criticized you, if your clients complained, if you tried so hard but there were no results and you might have as well stayed in bed for the whole day, it's good to escape to the world of fantasy. Maybe dealing with problems is better than running away from them but occasionally we need the environment which is soaked up in magic and adventure. The majority of us won't have time and money to lead exciting lives of travelers or pilots. But entering the world of fantasy is available for everyone. And isn't that great? This time a classic which immortalized a music legend that passed away recently. David Bowie can once again take you to a completely different universe. Labyrinth.
What if you're a medical student who suddenly felt a vocation to be someone else? What if you resigned from years of secure corporation career and decided to live in another country, working in a completely different job? What if your dream is to open a flower shop, a lavender plant, a chocolate factory? What if you come from a family of lawyers and you want to spend time playing computer games for money? What if you feel that your life purpose is not being stuck for hours behind a desk in an office. What if you dream of something outside the box? Maybe it's the circus? An inspiring film about people who had the courage to live their lives according to their dreams and vocation. About people who turned their jobs into art.
If God can have a son, Death can just as well have a daughter. A short animation film with a brilliant concept sheds a different light on the old-school way of dying. The technology significantly influenced our lives and also our deaths. And when your job is difficult to imitate when you perform something so unique, there are no courses and no training to replace you, you need a worthy deputy. Even though occasionally she will make mistakes. Mortys.
How many drugs do you take? I mean, really. How many different pills a week do you consume to keep yourself alive? Add vitamins, minerals, herbal pills. Add to this the time when you're really sick - be it the flu, cold, pneumonia, TB. Be it cancer. Are you depressed? Paranoid? Neurotic? Moody? Is your private life torn and you have to treat yourself to save the situation or is your private life torn because of your treatment? Do you take one pill to relieve the side effects of another? Or are you a typical consumer who, by watching TV advertisements, created a demand for a disease which you haven't even realized was there in the first place? Is a big part of your income spent on drugs?
I don't believe that contemporary world, the pace of life, our professional careers and life troubles left anyone immune to temptations of the drug industry. Employers often make us run like robots, even though it's not possible. We are not machines. Are you willing to devote your life to someone else's benefits? Do you really want to die of addiction to fill the pockets of those who from the start earn n times more than you do?
It's easier to talk about one's own perspective. When I was a teen I had a paper notebook in which I scribbled stories with my not so perfect handwriting. Then I got a vintage but hideous typewriter from the sixties and I enjoyed every sound that it made and the lengthy process of scrolling down the page. In junior high, I got my first PC. It was expensive stuff when you compared it to the average salary but I loved the keyboard and the fact you could print your work straight away. I had access to the Internet, I discovered YouTube. When I went to the university I bought my first cheap laptop. You shouldn't buy too cheap as you pay twice, so after a while, I had to buy another one, this time decent. It worked for years but it was heavy as hell and commuting with it from the dorms to the house for the weekend messed with my back. For scholarship money, I bought a netbook. When I started working I bought a tablet and another laptop. This time light and easily portable. Times change. Times fly. I rarely think about the story behind my writing machines. But, as behind every product are real people, there are individuals who did something great for the whole civilization. They were exceptional and they changed our lives in a way we now treat for granted. I was prejudiced, I must say. Now I grew to admire the man. Steve Jobs.
When incredible creatures start to be your companions in the life adventure. When the most genuine and honest human values you can learn not from humans but from monsters and when you take a journey in search of home, love, and security. A simple story so original in its plot, it's difficult to pass it unnoticed. What makes us human? Is it the way we are built, physically or culturally, or is it the way we behave? How important is the way we treat others? How much pain can we bear and how much suffering can we inflict on others? A wise film for everyone. We all have our beasts, even though they look more or less like people.
It's difficult nowadays to live a completely secluded life, hiding from people, civilization and the achievements of the modern world. Even if you're a vampire, you need constant nourishment, security, and a house to shelter your children, parents, and grandparents. With the touches of the beloved Adam's family, the ridiculousness of What We Do in The Shadows and unique Polish humor hiding in beautiful Polish countryside, there was one vampire family who aimed high. Even if you drink blood, you're not doomed to a life devoid of one good laugh. Polish stereotypes are also great to suck from, whether it's the priest's foot or the policeman's neck. Enjoy.
I used to love watching the magical fables of brave young people, fantastic creatures, bad princes and evil rulers in their gigantic castles. I adored stories about friendship and comradeship which are difficult to find in real life. I dreamed about distant lands following a completely different set of rules. Don't you miss the times when filmmakers treated us seriously, and even as kids we could watch serious stories with serious meaning, whether or not they were deprived of the reality we are used to seeing day by day? Don't you miss spending time listening to fairy tales instead of playing PC games all day long? A classic tale of love, courage, and adventure just for you.
