Long life can give you something which you won't get at school, even being the smartest of the smartest and the most studious. Long life can give you experience and perspective. For someone so devoted to the beauty of flora and fauna, to the endless and awe-inspiring, untouched, and pristine, it must be heart-breaking to see that our planet is being destroyed. There are more and more of us, humans, and there are fewer and fewer green areas, nature reserves, and animal habitats. This war, however, the war of humans vs nature has no chance for us being the winners. Unless we stop our expansion, we will cut the branch we are sitting on and cause our downfall. A few very wise pieces of advice for people, governments, and politicians, and a heritage of a precious person who early on noticed that we are tenants of the same planet, along with animals, and plants. We are not the owners. David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet.
While the majority of writers dream about instant success and leaving the legacy along the lines of Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, or the financial paradise of J.K. Rowling or Stephen King, a lot will face the bitter pill of professional drawbacks. And if your literary career is dying a slow and unappreciated death, can you use your talents for a bit different craft? Yes, winning literary prizes is glorious, but when your rent is unpaid, your pet is sick, and you have literally no money, how can you truly get by another day? What if entering the path of crime was a temporary fix to your problems? Based on a true story, hilarious, and real - a struggle of a writer who found a peculiar literary vocation. Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Go fight the forces of nature and find out how small you are and how weak! Pride is our greatest sin; our belief in our unstoppable, unsinkable, undefeated - laughed by Mother Nature with countless casualties. And we tend to forget about it just as often as we are reminded. We established rules, which are here to curb our wild tempers but up there, far away at sea, those rules don't apply. Imagine a ship that sets sails to hunt for whales' oil. Imagine a monster whale that can destroy a human plan with one move of its tail. Imagine being lost, stranded, and alone: with death breathing into your neck and choices no one wants to make. Inspired by America's epic Moby Dick, a story of the sea, friendship, and a sense of duty to the core of human values. In the Heart of the Sea.
Almost all of us fell for it. The magic of Hollywood, the purchase of the illusion, the dream. I used to kiss farewell the screen of a TV set after each memorable film ended, hoping to see it again, a five-year-old's tribute to the hard work of fantasy makers. But the film is not just the 2-hour story cut by advertisements for us to watch, devouring on popcorn. It's the outcome of hundreds of hours of work, rehearsals, break-downs, tabloid registered ups and downs, scandals, the pain of being forgotten and a whole lot of personal drama going on in the meantime.
In 1969 the wife of our Polish Roman Polanski, the actress Sharon Tate, and her friends were murdered by Charles Manson's gang, creating for eternity a trauma in Hollywood's history, a myth equaled with Marylin Monroe's death. This is the compilation of events that led to this tragedy. Or is it? Hilarious, action-filled, and entertaining on so many levels. Can it get any better? Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Very often we seem to love our pets more than our family members. We are astonished by the amount of energy and love they give us, we are devastated at their diseases, accidents, and deaths. People cherish various bonds that they developed over the course of their lives. Some of us can be named great parents, grandparents, siblings, spouses, or friends. Others one of the most important bonds in their lives consider the relationship with a pet. But how this friendship came about? A fable on the human's best friend, an old world at the beginning of human civilization, and a bond old as time, especially for those who have an animal by their side. ALPHA.
Sometimes we wish we were smarter, more charismatic, more assertive or brave. We know we are good enough to get this promotion, this man/woman, this level of success. But we are who we are and drugs, caffeine, or alcohol rarely change the status quo. We don't have the guts to make our dreams come true. If only there was a magic item which would grant us all the things we desire, if only there was something which would enable us to release our deeply hidden potential. An unappreciated banker was lucky enough to find such a thing. An ancient mask with powers he wasn't expecting to turn his life upside down and change him into an unpredictable cartoon alfa male with exaggerated ego. A tale about our hidden desires and frustrations, and the way to finally put dreams into actions. At the end of the day, we all wear a mask and we seem to be a different person depending on the company and circumstances. It's high time we were ourselves. Maybe this time we will strike gold. The Mask.
When gianormous creatures destroy your habitat, you gather your forces together. You experiment with technology, intelligence, compatibility of your peers, and human strength. You create a weapon. Every weapon is the extension of the human body: a knife: an extension of nails and hands, a spear: of an arm, a bow, gun, missile: a combination of the former with a bigger impact and a larger scale. The human imagination created another extension: a Jaeger: operated by a human brain and body, able to crash the monsters of the underwater world. An appreciation of the human intelligence, the fact that women can be equally good as men even in the seemingly masculine tasks, and a whole lot of positive ideals in the battle against the forces of nature. While some science-fiction ideas actually came true, we should wait for what the future holds. Maybe we will also need a hyper-innovative extension of ourselves to last millennia. A 2013 film with a 2018 sequel, Pacific Rim.
If you established a relationship with a pet, you know the feeling. The fondness, loyalty, instinctive protection, friendship and a lot of fun. Once your pet is dead, you might end up sobbing for weeks. Imagine a boy who went on a rescue mission to save his beloved protector, imagine an island occupied by dogs taken away from their owners. Finally, imagine a political system which doesn't allow for dogs, and a power which in an unscrupulous way can deprive its citizens of the friendship it had established centuries ago. With a dose of cynicism, great story-telling and canine animation, which blows your mind, Isle of Dogs.
Sometimes you just know that some lifestyle is for you. Sometimes the place at the far end of the world pulls you with its unexplainable force, letting you know that your fate has been pre-written. You can fight with it, you can delude yourself that it's just a feeling, that's it's not meant to be. But fight with destiny is lost from the start. Sometimes you just know. You know what profession is fit for your predispositions, what place you will call home, what passion will accelerate your days and what love will turn your life upside down. And even if you are an untrained young beautiful woman who has never been in Africa, you soon realize that your place has been chosen by the higher force. An amazing story of a pioneer in animal observation and research, an extraordinary lifestyle, and a woman who made her dreams come true. Jane Goodall in Jane.
We usually associate heroes with white Americans or Europeans hit by personal tragedy, which made them plot vendetta against their enemies and opponents. The world is far wider than the cities we are used to. It comprises tribes, following different customs and traditions, landscapes unsurpassed in their beauty, wild animals living freely in wide open spaces of valleys and hills, and people struck with global problems far different than mortgage and student's loans. A tribute to Africa with its all distinguished highlights, a story of Wakanda, revenge, technological progress, and a proof that the world is in need of another kind of hero. Black Panther.
It is never too late to fall in love. Beauty and youth might pass in time, but time, in return, gives you experience and maturity. Some things are also eternal, whether it's a good story told, love and passion, or talent for turning a simple story into magic. Sometimes you think that you are in control of your life but the fate had written your life scenario long ago and you just have to watch it unfold before you and go with the flow of fortune and misery intertwined. If you are in a mood for one unbelievable fairy tale and a whole lot of unexplained incidences, set off on the journey to see Monica Bellucci's immortal beauty, Emir Kusturica's storytelling gift and your belief in the power of love will be restored. On the Milky Road.
Our brains are extraordinary. They allow us to remember images, sounds, smells, numbers, and bring back memories from years before. They make it possible for us to learn, speak, write, communicate, and survive. Their individual structure put us in categories of predispositions, making some of us science and maths-oriented, others: artists, soothing our senses; skillful parents and teachers, bringing up generations of the future; businessmen, creating jobs for millions; doctors, immune to the disgust of blood and guts, and engineers, building everything from nothing. Our minds made us survive millennia and push our civilization towards the better, healthier and stronger. For some, being a genius means failing at other aspects of life adjustments, as you cannot achieve anything without sacrifices. Temple Grandin, a woman who revolutionized the cattle industry, despite being a woman in a man-dominated world and in spite of suffering from autism. Enjoy.
There is a strange belief among human beings that we, as species, are better than animals. We think that our inferiors have no feelings, attachment, and emotions whatsoever. They can be used for milk, meat, skin, fur, and jewelry, bred in disastrous conditions to multiply the profit. Some people like killing on their own terms, be the trigger to the bullet. They want to hunt and put down what belongs to the wilderness. And they don't see anything bad in their actions, quite the reverse, they praise their entertainment and see themselves as heroes. With a realistic eye and a dose of cynicism, Ulrich Seidl's sin Safari. Doesn't killing in the blink of an eye with entertainment and collective reasons in mind put us a little bit lower on the scale of human development? Food for thought. Enjoy.
Missionary position for the purpose of procreation can be a slogan promoted by the Church, however, many members of the Church proved over the years that it is not their favorite. Some people like sophisticated games, role-plays, sadomasochism, porn, toys or mind-bending positions. Some like call girls, domination, and vulnerability. It's difficult to blame others for stretching a little bit away from the norm, taking into account your own fetishes and fantasies. The best advice would be to follow your wildest dreams and make your sex life an unforgettable adventure. But if your fetishes are a little bit over the top? The consequences of following your desire might be far too serious. A hilarious film about sex, The Little Death.
What makes a perfect villain? Why all of a sudden you hate so much that you want to destroy everybody else? Why years of humiliation bring about the worst in people and deprive them of their conscience? My two favorite villain characters: Catwoman: an assistant not appreciated by the bossy dishonest boss and the Penguin: a child rejected by his parents for appalling looks. The first one turning from a helpless spinster into sexy, indestructible power woman, the second switching from a hideous underground creature into a seemingly respectable and popular man. An epitome of unappreciated women who finally find their strength to rebel and burst the bubble of not being noticed, and successful outcasts who overcome the years of high school and family humiliation. Does it matter that they are a little bit evil? A nineties' classic and a part in the whole series of Batman enterprise. Enjoy.
It's best to disassociate yourself from the truth. It's nice to avoid the images of pain, cruelty, and suffering. It's easier to opt for the pretty package: nice shoes, restaurant meals, crispy salad and a barbecue. Fun fact: the ones who are connected with the business, rarely eat meat. Were they traumatized by the images of slaughter, blood, and bones? Couldn't they differentiate between two pictures: a free animal with emotions and a chop on a plate? There were times when people made divisions among themselves, decided who was better and who had the right to live. They built slaughterhouses for people called concentration camps. Now they just build slaughter houses for animals. It's easy to disassociate yourself from the truth if this truth doesn't concern your best friend. An eye-opener and a story of friendship, a battle for animal rights and cruelty of the business world which values profit over mercy. Eye-watering and unbelievably awesome. Maybe we should be better as people to deserve the love and gratitude of our pets. Okja.
We, humans, don't learn by rules. If I tell you not to put your fingers into an electric socket, you'd most likely ask why. They have two holes, if you're bored the best way to spend your time is to stick your fingers there and wait for the result. If you say you're not so stupid as to even try, I'll ask whether you checked or someone told you that you shouldn't do this. How can you be so sure? Maybe the danger is only in theory?
We, humans, learn by stories. Possibly once you heard a story about a boy who was so intrigued by the electric socket that he decided to put there his two fingers and experienced a tragic death. Half of his body was burned from the shock, some pieces of meat from his arms, hands, and calf literally fell apart. He died, of course. But the smell of grilled meat was filling the room for days.
Are you still attracted to the electric socket or will you steer clear of it, always remembering the story about the grilled boy every time you want to play with the tempting device? Would you like to be told a story about a boy who survived on a boat with a tiger? Unbelievable? Possibly, yes. Would you like to learn something about God, religion, friendship, faith, us as humans and discover wisdom which reaches far beyond intellect and reason? Something more than a film, Life of Pi.
Imagine the cutest little pet that you get as a Christmass present. It's sweet, furry, soft and adorable. It will be your best friend if you just allow you two to bond. But every perfection has its dark side. If you break a couple of rules, you can suffer terrible consequences. What is beautiful on the outside can easily morph into the ugliest, the most dangerous and uncontrollable creature that will make your life a living nightmare. With a sequel: Gremlins. A cult gem from some people's childhood. Enjoy.
Civilization is an artificial concept which makes everything run clockwork. We sleep on a bed, having for centuries slept on the floor of sticks and grass. We eat portioned and available food, having been used to hunting and gathering for millennia. We switched caves for flats, fires for central heating, furs for nylon and synthetic materials. We turned work at the farm into work in a corporation in front of the computer. We replaced the sun with antidepressants, physical exercise with box diet and sex with porn. Are you happy, then, with the state of affairs? Don't you feel that there's something missing? There was one woman who turned her thoughts into action and broke the bonds with ordered and reasonable life. Wild.
Remember your college experience? These endless hours of cramming before the exams, social groups dividing themselves according to interests, political views, and financial status? Your first nights away from your parents, your first heart breaks and sexual escapades? Evening classes and lonesome coming back home at 3 am, one-night stands, random acquaintances, and broken friendships? Crazy parties and irrational challenges resembling prison bullying? Well, this is something which brings the college experience to another level. Hungry for another type of education? Are you really hungry? Raw.
